Frequently Asked Questions

General Charter Information

What types of charters do you offer?

We offer halibut and salmon fishing charters, whale-watching, and sightseeing tours around Juneau and Auke Bay, Alaska. All trips are private — no shared charters.

How many guests can join a charter?

Our boats accommodate up to six guests per trip. You’ll have the vessel to yourself — we never mix groups.

How do I book a trip?

Call (907) 463-1254, toll-free (866) 244-5467, or email mhbonfils@msn.com. Early booking is recommended during cruise season.

Why choose Big Jim’s Charters?

With decades of local experience, flexible scheduling, and fully private charters, we deliver authentic Alaskan adventures customized for cruise guests and local anglers alike.

Cruise Ship & Transportation

Can you adjust the charter time if we’re arriving on a cruise ship?

Yes. We’re flexible and do our best to match your cruise schedule as long as another charter isn’t already booked. Just provide your ship’s arrival and departure times.

Do you provide transportation from the cruise ship docks?

Yes. We can arrange round-trip transportation between the Juneau cruise docks and Auke Bay Harbor. The round-trip rate is typically around $100 per group.

What if I have my own transportation?

Guests with rental cars or local transport can meet us directly at the Auke Bay Marina. We’ll share detailed directions and contact info before your trip.

What if my cab drops me at the wrong location?

Juneau has several marinas, so it can happen. Call us right away — we’ll direct your driver or arrange a quick pickup to get you to the correct dock.

Where do we meet if we’re coming from a cruise ship?

Our driver will meet you near your terminal holding a Big Jim’s Charters sign. You can also call or text when you disembark so we can coordinate in real time.

Fishing License & Regulations

Do you sell or include Alaska fishing licenses?

We no longer sell licenses on board. Guests 16 and older must purchase their license online before the trip — it’s not included in the charter price.

How do I buy my Alaska fishing license?

Visit www.adfg.alaska.gov to buy your license. Save a digital copy to your phone or print it out — each license includes a QR code we’ll scan before boarding.

On-the-Water Experience

How long are the trips?

We offer 4-, 6-, and 8-hour private charters. Custom times can be arranged for cruise passengers or special requests.

What kind of fish can we catch?

Depending on the season, you can catch halibut, king salmon, coho (silver) salmon, pink salmon, or chum salmon. Rockfish and cod are also common.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety always comes first. If sea or weather conditions are unsafe, we’ll reschedule your trip or issue a full refund.

Do you clean and package the fish?

Yes, we’ll clean and bag your fish at no charge. Local processors can vacuum seal and ship your catch for an additional fee.

Are children allowed on board?

Yes! Our charters are family-friendly and welcome guests of all ages.

Do you combine groups or add people to my trip?

Never. Each charter is private — only your group will be on the boat unless you invite additional guests.

What should I bring?

Dress in layers, bring a warm jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, and your fishing license. Non-slip shoes and a small cooler for your catch are also helpful.

Can I customize a trip for sightseeing, photography, or special occasions?

Absolutely. We can tailor your private charter for photography, whale-watching, or any special event — just let us know your goals when booking.
